Last Weekend in February

Wayne was scheduled to sing with his chorus, Una Voce, at the Winter Pride Festival in Al Lopez Park in Tampa on Saturday morning. The weather forecast was not too promising. When we got there it was overcast, but no rain yet.

We parked in the field east of Raymond James Stadium. Home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and walked across the street and thru the park to the area where the event was taking place.

Spring Home of Yankees, Legends Field . . . This is across the street from Raymond James Stadium.

Around noon the sky opened up and there was a torrential downpour with lightning and thunder. The performance was cancelled and as the rain continued and as the ground began to be covered in water, everyone began to pack up.

Cute, but I wonder how this little fella really felt?

Before the storm hit.

There's about an inch or two of water on the ground.

We were walking back thru the park to get to our car, when this panel truck pulled along side and this woman asked us . . . "Want a lift to the parking lot?" We were soaked, so we said sure. She said (in a gruff voice) "Hop in the back!" We rounded the truck and opened the side door and climbed in. It was an empty truck, with only windows in the back doors and a cage blocking the front seats from the back. As we shut the door we looked at each other, both thinking..."we're going to be driven somewhere and hacked up!" Fortunately, that was unfounded. But, unfortunately, this woman had no idea where she was going. She drove around to this intersection and said this is where we should probably get out and just cross the street to our car. As we exited the cab, we noticed that we were actually back on the other side of the event area and even farther from our car from when we started. As we were again walking to the car, some of the others from the chorus we passing us, saying, "We thought you left a while ago?" "It's a looooong story..."

Later that night we were to meet some of Wayne's co-workers to celebrate some of their birthdays. We had dinner reservations at the Gallery Eclectic Bistro in the Bay Street area of the International Plaza in Tampa.

Pineapple Mango Salmon..... YUM!

Wayne and me.

James and Milena. Milena is one of the celebrants. She is from Colombia.

It was a fun night. There were about 15 in the party. This is Milena, Sylvia and Dema. Dema is from Jordan and is expecting her first child in less than a month. Cynthia (not pictured) moved to Tampa Bay area from New Orleans after Katrina hit. It was fun talking with people from such different backgrounds.

San Gennaro Festa, Where are you?

So we decided to check out the San Gennaro Festa in Clearwater on Sunday. WOW! There are Italians in Clearwater!

Because of a momentary lapse of memory, we drove around a lovely section of Clearwater trying to find this festival. We drove around so much that we began to see some of the same pedestrians and they were starting to wave to us. Very friendly natives down here.

Having no luck, we decided to drive to this great Italian restaurant, Angelino's. Each portion of pasta is a pound, I am told. By now, my mouth was watering. Having missed this festival, I had it right here for a nice bowl of pasta. After driving thru two or three counties, we arrived to an empty parking lot. ( I jest....we were still in the same county.) The sign says they don't open till 4:00 pm. I couldn't stop my hands from making some very Italian gestures. All signs of endearment, of course.

Cell phone conversation: OK, Johnny, where is this festival? Oh? Coachman Park? Not at the corner of Coachman and Drew? My bad?
So . . . we did make it. I was hoping for more food, but with a sunny day, around 80 degrees in mid February, how could I complain???

How many Italians can you squeeze into a tiny booth selling t-shirts?

What's a Sunday afternoon without a game of bocci?

A puzzle for you. Where's Wayner? Can you find him in the above picture?

Saturday at Weedon Island

Saturday was a beautiful day . . . in the low 80s and sunny. We took a walk around Coffee Pot Bayou and then went to the Weedon Island Preserve, which is located just north of where I live. Up 4th Street North and over Gandy Blvd., near the Dog Track.

It's a great place. There are paths and raised walkways throughout the park, and kayak 'trails'. We spent a couple of hours wandering around.

This is the foundation ruins from an airport tower that used to be there years back.

We saw this guy on our way heading to the parking lot.

That's St. Pete skyline in the background.

Valentine Dinner

I love to eat. What Italian doesn't? And Wayne loves to cook. So . . . lucky me! We started with a creamy tomato basil soup (those are the fresh basil leaves that I got to shred!) We had chicken breasts with port wine and bing cherries and a roasted shrimp and orzo salad.

I had told Wayne that coconut cake was one of my favorites . . . so for dessert he surprised me with a Valentine Coconut Cake! Yummy cream cheese frosting to boot!

Weekend Goings On

Saturday morning Wayne and I went to the Saturday Market in downtown St Pete. One of the members from the credit union has a booth there, Island Time Design selling Adirondack chairs. We wanted to take a look, tried some of them.....really nice!

Saturday afternoon a bunch of us met at Cheddar's in Largo for lunch. John's sister Carolyn was visiting from Rhode Island so he invited us to join them.

Our waiter "Moose" took this picture of the group.
John, Scott, Greg, Carolyn, Wayne and Rich.
After lunch, John, Carolyn, Wayne and I went to the Oldsmar Flea Market. I had never been there. It was fun, but I didn't see one flea. There was shed after shed...loaded with booths. Some nice stuff. But a lot of booths that made me wonder if their tenants had any hopes of selling any of their "wares". I did buy some wooden toaster tongs!

Caught in the act: munching on a funnel cake. You'ld never know I just came from lunch!

Brunch: Canteloupe with ricotta cheese and blueberries.
